Department store group De Bijenkorf appoints new boss

Dutch retailer Vendex KBB has named Jacobs de Jonge as Chairman of the Management Board of its department store group de Bijenkorf with effect from April 1st 2006.

de Jonge was employed by US retail group Wal-Mart International. From 1977 till 2003 he held several management functions within SHV Holding NV, in particular for the Makro brand in Asia and Latin America. He succeeds Jan Berger who will retire at the end of May 2006.

Vendex KBB is the largest non-food retailer in the Netherlands with net-sales of € 4.1 billion. It is also active in six other European countries (Belgium, Luxembourg, Denmark, Germany, France and Spain).

The company operates various formats across department stores, variety stores and specialty stores. Its portfolio includes the leading DIY retailer in the Benelux region (Praxis and Formido in the Netherlands, Brico en Brico Plan-it in Belgium), the variety store HEMA (the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany), the only national department store formats in the Netherlands, positioned respectively in the mid-market (V&D) and up-market (Bijenkorf) segments, three internationally operated niche apparel retailers (M&S, Hunkemöller and Claudia Sträter) and two consumer electronics retail formats (Dixons and Dynabyte).

In total, Vendex KBB operates 12 store formats with approx. 1,700 outlets and 1.9 million square meters of retail space in seven countries and employs approx. 40,000 people.
