Dollar General Literacy Foundation grants $2.6m to nonprofit organizations

Reinforcing its commitment to help people gain basic literacy skills, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation has awarded grants worth more than $2.6 million.

The Foundation awarded grants to 243 nonprofit organizations assisting 83,463 individuals and families in communities served by Dollar General stores.

The grants provide support to nonprofit programs that reach low-level literacy adults and their families. Adult basic education, GED preparation, English as a second language, family literacy and workforce literacy are among the initiatives that will benefit from these grants.

Dollar General Chairman and CEO David Perdue said, "Our company's mission to serve others extends into the communities our employees and customers call home."

"These grants reflect the generosity of our customers and the strength of Dollar General's commitment to help our neighbors take a major step toward improving the quality of their lives," he added.

The Dollar General Literacy Foundation accepts proposals on an annual basis. The company will begin soliciting 2007 proposals online on January 2nd 2007.

Dollar General is a discount retailer with 8,038 neighborhood stores in 33 states as of March 31st 2006. It offers convenience and value to customers by offering consumable basic items that are frequently used and replenished, such as food, snacks, health and beauty aids andcleaning supplies, as well as a selection of basic apparel, house wares and seasonal items at everyday low prices.
