Accusations of taking bribe to award a sick textile factory to Tanzanian company by its two senior officials, has been vehemently denied by Institute for the Management of State Holdings (IGEPE).

The revelations which have been published by a local weekly alleging that the said officials received bribes worth US $50,000 each for awarding the textile unit “Texmoque” to the Tanzanians neglecting the powerful Gulamo Group of Nampula.

The allegations have been backed by a tape recording of a phone conversation between one of the officials and the representative of Mohammed Enterprises Tanzania Ltd (METL).

IGEPE just has 30 percent share in the company and the rest is owned by Portuguese Multiplier Group, owned by Magalhaes family.

METL initially offered a million dollars for Texmoque and promised $20 million of investment in the company to upgrade the facilities at the unit to make it more competitive.

Taxmoque shareholders had earlier turned down the proposal of Gulamo Group as they felt that it was not interested in reviving the unit and they did not want the company closure.
