Rumor had spread that Indian textiles and soda ash manufacturer Gujarat Heavy Chemicals Limited had announced purchase of Dan River Inc. in December 2005 that never got materialized.
Dan River was still entertaining offers from other companies to sell the plant, rather than close it completely.
It was supposed to begin laying off nearly 300 workers in Brookneal plant on August 22, in case a buyer did not come forward.
Even now, the company still is talking to interested buyers and has not come up with a timeline to close the plant.
The company was delaying the layoffs because it hadn't set a timeline to stop production yet.
In June, it announced it intended to close the plant altogether, as companies usually have to follow certain reporting procedures when closing a plant.
Companies are required to give employees at least 60 days notice but the final closure date can be subject to change, as companies sometimes stay open longer than the original closing date for a variety of reasons, such as obligations to clients.
However, the company officials were uncertain as to when it would perform the final layoff.
