A strong boundary laying east to west from Nebraska to northern Virginia separated distinct air masses. South of this boundary, excessive heat and humidity was the rule with temperatures in the low 100s and heat index values approaching or exceeding110 degrees.

Consumers bought out of personal comfort needs. North of the boundary a fall-like air mass enveloped a large area from the Northern Plains into the mid-Atlantic and Northeast. A reinforcing shot of cooler than typical air occurred late week; morning temperatures averaged in the 40s and 50s and likely stimulated early fall back to school apparel demand.

Tropical Strom Erin made shore in southern Texas and provided copious rains over Texas (6 to 10 inches on average). It weakened as it moved northward, but spreading heavy rains into the Plains. The West stayed seasonably warm with monsoon showers and thunderstorms in the Rockies.

Hurricane Dean gathered strength and became a Category 4 storm in the Caribbean. Consumer Impact in the East/Mid-Western North America: It was a regional story. In the South, summer demand levels (e.g. A/C, summer apparel, cold beverages) were very high given the excessive heat and humidity in most locations. Consumers flocked to malls and indoor venues. Consumers in the North saw comfortable conditions.

Consumer Impact in the Western Portions of North America: While the western Canadian provinces experienced pleasant conditions with cooler than typical conditions, strong heat and humidity levels were prevalent further south across much of the U.S., which drove strong late season demand.
