Hurricane Dean stays south of US

Severe weather reports were widespread due to damaging winds, hail, and some tornadoes reported across the Plains. It was a much different problem in the South, where excessive heat and humidity continue unabated; all-time daily high temperature records were set in Atlanta, Montgomery, and Birmingham, Alabama.

Bone-dry conditions added to the misery as the severe drought worsened. By comparison, the weather in the West was pretty uneventful with mountain showers and thunderstorms and seasonably warm temperatures; cooler in western Canada.

Consumer Impact in the East/Mid-Western North America:
It was mainly a regional story. In the South, summer demand levels (e.g. A/C, summer apparel, cold beverages) were very high given the excessive heat and humidity in most locations. Consumers flocked to malls and indoor venues. Store traffic in the North improved after a cool, wet start to the week.

Consumer Impact in the Western Portions of North America:
Consumers in coastal Texas made a run on emergency supplies (e.g. canned foods, water, batteries, etc.) in anticipation of Dean. Elsewhere, Seasonal demand was likely near normal levels. Cooler weather in Canada likely produced an early surge in fall product demand.
