Labor Day Weekend Brought Pleasantly Cool Temperatures East; Strong Heat in the West; Stormy South. Hurricane Felix Formed in the Caribbean.
Holiday Weekend Review (1-3 September 2007): Consumers in the Midwest and Northeast experienced pleasant conditions over the Labor Day Holiday weekend. Seasonably cool high temperatures generally in the upper 70s to low 80s with very low humidity levels were prevalent.
Cool morning lows in the 50s (40s north) combined with dry weather likely provided a boost for early fall purchasing, particularly for specialty apparel retailers. Although it was not as hot as in recent weeks, the South experienced frequent periods of rains which dampened store traffic levels.
From the Plains to the West Coast, unseasonably warm temperatures (90s and 100s) persisted, thereby providing optimal conditions for late summer clearance. The Pacific Northwest and much of Canada remained seasonably cool with occasional showers.
Last Week (week-ending 09/01/2007): While the week started hot and humid in most U.S. locations early week, it was a week of transition. A strong surge of cool Canadian air made its way out of western Canada mid-week bringing significantly cooler temperatures and much lower humidity levels with it.
Temperatures in many locations fell 25 to 30 degrees F in a 24 hour period. Showers and thunderstorms accompanied this strong front from the Upper Midwest into the Northeast. The frontmade it off the East Coast by end-week providing cool, refreshing conditions and brilliant sunshine. Precipitation was widespread across the Deep South.
