In a unique initiative of its kind, Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) demonstrates a novel way to celebrate Janmashtami.
Lord Krishna's one of the names is Gopal meaning a person who maintains cows. RIL on this Janmashtami day on 4th September 2007 donated two cowsheds in two villages of Dera Chikari and Kanalus near its new SEZ refinery.
Mr. Parimal Nathwani, Group President of RIL inaugurated these two cowsheds in the morning of Janmashtami amidst chanting of Vedic verses. He performed pooja and led the cows to the shed to mark opening of newly constructed sheds.
Sarpanchs Mr Hirengiri Goswami of Dera Chikari and Mr Hamir Ali of Kanalus as well as large number of villager leaders, senior citizens and children remained present.
They were appreciative of RIL's gesture to support their cows. Sweets were distributed to villagers and fodder supplied to the cows by RIL. At both places, villagers greeted Mr. Nathwani and other RIL officials.
Both Dera Chikari and Kanalus cowsheds with large and spacious construction by RIL have an inbuilt facilities viz drinking water reservoir for cattle, storage for fodder and a bull-house.
The sheds are fortified with compound walls. Artistic gate depicting Lord Krishna playing flute surrounded by cows make the cowsheds more meaningful.
RIL initiated this activity since 1995-96 in villages surrounding its refinery complex. It has been maintaining cows of about 10 villages surrounding its refinery complex and the SEZ at Jamnagar; and supplies fodder to village cowsheds.
RIL has constructed cowsheds in all these villages. Committee of villagers conducts affairs of the cowshed and keeps accounts.
Construction of these two cowsheds in Dera Chikari and Kanalus recently and their opening on Janmashtami day is a testimony of a unique corporate sustainability philosophy of RIL.
