Summer weather widespread in US

Widespread flooding was reported. Sultry conditions were predominant over most of the U.S. with heat index levels exceeding 100 degrees F across most of the South. Cooler weather was generally confined to much of Canada, Pacific Northwest, and the Northern Plains.

Persistent tropical moisture from the Gulf of Mexico provided most of the Gulf Coast from Texas to the Carolinas heavy rains (2 to 4 inches) during the week, while much of the Plains experienced severe thunderstorms ahead of a late week cold front. Tropical activity remained high as Gabrielle was officially named as a tropical storm late week and made its way toward the North Carolina coast.

Consumer Impact in the East/Mid-Western North America: The late summer heat and humidity had consumers snapping up late summer bargains at the expense of early fall demand.

Consumer Impact in the Western Portions of North America: While the Pacific Northwest experienced cooler conditions that likely stimulated early fall purchasing, the remainder of the West had consumers reaching for late summer items to beat the heat.
