Many locations experienced high temperatures reaching or exceeding 90 degrees late week. In the Northeast, this represented readings up to 20 degrees above normal; many high temperature records were set from the mid-Atlantic into New England.
The cold front made it to the East Coast on Friday providing much needed rains and breaking the excessive heat and humidity. Hurricane Lorenzo made landfall well south into eastern Mexico, while Karen formed into a tropical storm in the open Atlantic.
Consumer Impact in the East/Mid-Western North America: It was a very challenging week for retailers selling all manner of fall items such as sweaters, fleece, boots, cold weather consumables, etc.
Consumer Impact in the Western Portions of North America: The much cooler weather provided a strong surge in demand for fall apparel. Some locations north were cold enough to stimulate early demand for winter apparel and heating products.
