As a result, heavy rains were the predominant trend through the remainder of the week from the Plains to the East Coast. The Southeast, Appalachians, and East Coast experienced several inches of rain during the period, which was quite welcome to those areas devastated by drought.
Localized flooding was reported. However, the biggest story of the week by far was the devastating California wildfires, which were exacerbated by weather. A strong high pressure system over the Great Basin produced the strong (very warm, very dry) easterly winds known as the Santa Anas, which amplified the fire intensity. Fortunately, the winds abated late week. It was seasonably cool and mainly dry across much of Canada.
Consumer Impact in the East/Mid-Western North America: After enduring more unseasonably warm weather early week, the weather turned significantly cooler (and wetter), which helped drive a demand surge for cold weather seasonal items to include fleece, sweaters, soups, etc.
Consumer Impact in the Western Portions of North America: Canada and the Pacific Northwest experienced temperatures close to seasonal norms, which kept demand levels close to historical averages. However, retailers in the Los Angeles and San Diego areas will be severely impacted in the aftermath of the fires in the days and weeks to come.
