This cold air gradually made its way south and east late week. Heavy rains fell ahead of the cold front producing a wet Thanksgiving Day from the Midwest to the East Coast. While near record warm temperatures blanketed the East Coast on Thanksgiving morning, significantly colder and drier air swept in, providing ideal timing for Black Friday.
In many markets, temperatures dropped 25 to 30 degrees in a matter of hours. The Intermountain West experienced winter storminess late week while the West Coast remained seasonably warm and generally dry.
Consumer Impact in the East/Mid-Western North America: Colder temperatures were experienced later in the week and over the weekend which resulted in very strong seasonal sales. Dry weather by Black Friday was optimal for high store traffic volumes. This was a strong change from a very warm 2006 Black Friday weekend.
Consumer Impact in the Western Portions of North America: Near normal temperatures kept seasonal demand within historical levels. Portions of the Rockies that received measureable snowfall experienced a demand surge for winter goods.
