Combined with very strong winds and gusts exceeding 100mph, many locations experienced devastating flooding, structural damage, and power outages. Remnants from this storm produced a swath of snow further eastward from the Dakotas into the Mid-Atlantic mid-week.
Several inches fell in Chicago, Indianapolis, Pittsburgh, and Washington, D.C. Temperatures warmed in the west during the week. However, another Pacific storm system moved into the West Coast late week dumping heavy rains across California and the Southwest.
Consumer Impact in the East/Mid-Western North America: Unseasonably cold temperatures helped increase demand for cold weather items such as outerwear, boots, and hot beverages. Wintry weather during the week drove increased demand for snow and ice removal products, winter car care, etc.
Consumer Impact in the Western Portions of North America: Consumers in the battered Pacific Northwest were driven to purchase emergency items such as batteries, generators, canned foods, etc. Late week storminess in California hampered retail traffic.
