DuPont Tyvek print media has enabled a unique fine arts installation that is now on display at the Arlington Arts Center in Arlington, Virginia.
Developed by artist Rosemary Feit Covey, “The 0 Project” is a 15-foot-high, 300-foot-long piece printed on DuPont Tyvek print media that surrounds the outside of the Arts Center. The 0 Project features an image of a vast crowd of shouting faces looking at an unseen event.
Covey first became interested in Tyvek as a possible medium for the project because it had a texture similar to Japanese rice paper, a material she frequently uses for her wood engravings.
She began experimenting with Tyvek envelopes and was impressed with the unique blend of Tyvek properties, which make the material lightweight, durable, water resistant and capable of being hung outdoors during the fall and winter months.
In 2006, Covey reached out to Curt Oberholtzer, DuPont Graphics sign and banner segment leader. After months of consultation with the DuPont Graphics business and a FASTSIGNS franchise in Antioch, Tennessee, the 0 Project was digitized and printed on eight rolls of Tyvek. The entire process was completed in one day, with the final product weighing just 95 pounds.
“I knew that DuPont Tyvek was my best bet for Project 0 after I tested a roll of it by leaving it outside all winter and it survived,” Covey said. “DuPont was wonderful to work with from the beginning.
The Tyvek team was supportiveand unselfish every step of the way. I contacted many other companies for various components of the project and none of them were as helpful as DuPont.” The 0 Project is on display through February 2008.
