Lexington, Kentucky based mattresses & neck pillows maker Tempur-Pedic International Inc announced that all mattresses produced in the United States by the Company comply with California Technical Bulletin 603 (TB603). The bulletin, originally introduced in February 2003, revised and strengthened minimum guidelines for mattress fire safety standards in the state.
As a result, the Company revised its mattress line to include a barrier material that helps to resist flame penetration and to slow flame-spreading progress.
"The safety and comfort of customers in California and around the world is a top priority for Tempur-Pedic," said Tom Bryant, President of Tempur-Pedic International Inc. "After TB603 passed, production team immediately began working to meet the standards outlined in the bulletin. They are pleased to say that all of mattress models meet or exceed those standards."
TB603 was formulated to reduce the number of deaths and injuries to individuals from house fires involving a burning mattress. The measures outlined in the bulletin result in reduced heat output and slower speed of burning for mattress fires to allow people time to escape from their home if needed.
To comply with TB603 regulations, Tempur-Pedic's product designers and engineers developed a barrier material that sits directly under the mattress cover and completely encases the mattress so progress of flame spreading is slowed.
However, consumer safety was not the only thing considered when developing the Tempur-Pedic barrier material -- comfort and cost were also priorities. As a result, the barrier material was designed to provide a breathable, comfortable sleep surface for consumers without significantly impacting the cost of the product.
