Textile workers protest for better pay

Textile workers demanding better pay and other benefits, clashed with police in an industrial town near Dhaka leaving 50 people injured, sources informed.

Workers of Savar Export Processing Zone were demanding better wages and compulsory Friday off with overtime allowances among other fringe benefits.

Protestors became violent when some of them were prevented from joining the rally. They went on to stone and damage properties of other factories on their way and set ablaze about a dozen vehicles.

Sensing a conspiracy in this incident, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers & Exporters Association (BGMEA) urged Government to investigate the matter.

BGMEA informed that those factories bore ire of the protesters were friendly towards their employees and observed all Government stipulations.
