Evaporating textile sector leaves 500,000 workers jobless

During the past seven years Government has implemented several reforms to develop textile industry.

However, Jaiyeola Paul Olarewaju Director General of the Nigerian Textile, Garment and Tailoring Employers' Association has reveled that 500,000 textile workers have lost their jobs.

Jaiyeola said that before reforms were taken place there were more than 50 textile mills employing over a million people but now only 20 mills are operating in lagos.

He added "We earnestly wish to draw the attention of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to this new problem bedeviling the textile sector and implore the authorities to find immediate solutions to the issue at stake."

Jaiyeola suggested that Government should attract Chinese investors to invest in country's textile industry.

He also said that illegal textile imports should be stop at any cost as it is main reason for collapse of country's textile industry.

Jaiyeola Paul emphasized on better infrastructure facilities ans adequate reserves of oil so that obstruction of supply can be prevented.
