Members (almost 8000) of the Power Looms Owners' Association at Palladam, near Coimbatore have resorted to strike, demanding lower yarn prices.
Notably, power loom units making cloth on job work basis have not joined the strike.
Association had highlighted the plight of power loom owners to the Government and even urged to take prompt action against the steep rise in the price of yarn, however no outcome resulted.
According to the Association, the price of yarn (20s) used by the power looms went up to Rs69 from Rs64 a kg, while the price of count 25 warp yarn increased from Rs87 to Rs96 a kg.
The price of count 30 was quoted at Rs103 as against Rs98.
Power loom owners reduced their production level, as there was no proportionate increase in the price of power loom cloth.
Middlemen were playing up by hoarding stocks of cotton yarn and creating an artificial shortage, negatively affecting the textile industry, stated association office bearers.
Sources said the striker were adamant and would continue their protest till the government accedes to their demands in bringing down the yarn prices.
