Footwear industry workers will be given five percent increase in wage, informed John Zikhali, President, SA Clothing and Textile Workers' Union (Sactwu)today.

More than 11400 workers from 148 footwear units have been considered for this increase, Zikhali said.

This is a result of a two-year joint agreement concluded early last year, between employer organisations, SA Footwear and Leather Industries' Association, Association of Small and Medium Manufactures of Footwear and Allied Products and two unions, Sactwu and the National Union of Leather and Allied Workers.

According to this agreement, shop stewards will get an increase in leave from five days paid time off to seven days.

Trade union office bearers will receive an additional three days paid time for union activities.

The agreement would come into effect from July 1 this year till June 30, 2007.
