Flexibility in labour laws has been recommended by Textile Ministry as rigid laws hinder growth in the sector.
As part of its recommendations made to the Commerce and Finance Ministries, the issues were scrutinized by a committee of experts, headed by Shankersinh Vaghela, Textile Minister.
Vaghela said that the committee was considering measures such as increasing the minimum working hours in exclusive textile zones to 60 hours a week from the current 48 hours and changing contract labour laws along with simplification of laws for SEZs and textile parks.
To compete the world market, the industry has been demanding labour reforms that allow flexibility.
The committee is to take up important issues such as providing compensation for infrastructure inadequacies and exchange rate fluctuations to exporters, besides ensuring the reimbursement schemes such as duty drawback and DEPB.
