Due to heavy flood and fear of epidemics, workers of textile and diamond industries migrated to their native places. Around 200,000 textile workers moved back, incurring the loss of Rs30,000 crore for the industry.
Same is the case with diamond industry where skilled workers shifted to their home-lands in Saurashtra region and will return only after two weeks.
Machineries of textile units have been damaged in flood and owners of companies could not stop the workers as units are not operating.
Till now around 1.5 textile workers have migrated to Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Orissa, informed Haresh Saraiya of the Surat Weavers Cooperative Society.
Around 400 textile processing houses have no water and fuel and completely closed, informed Arunbhai Jariwala, former President, Surat Chamber of Commerce and current President of Surat Art Silk Cloth Manufacturing Association.
If the immediate arrangement of fuel is not made then 80 percent industry will have to suffer with heavy loss, Jariwala stated.
