A discrimination lawsuit was filed by the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in federal court against a garment manufacturer Rifu Apparel Corp. for allegedly not renewing the employment contracts of four female pregnant workers.

EEOC had asked for a jury trial at the US District Court to issue a permanent injunction stopping Rifu and its officers or representatives from engaging in discrimination on the basis of pregnancy.

The plaintiff requested the court to provide compensation for past and future pecuniary losses, including medical expenses not paid by the employers, for emotional pain and suffering, inconvenience, loss of enjoyment of life and humiliation.

Rifu had deprived the workers of employment benefits given to employees not affected by pregnancy and this unlawful practice was done with malice and with reckless indifference.
