US National Labour Committee (NLC) had recently issued a report of detailed violations of foreign workers' rights in the country, especially in the textile industry.

Minister of Labour Bassem Salem requested the garment players to atay calm and not panic about these claims.

He further informed the press that the Government has decided to employ domestic workers in place of immigrant labour to reduce this problem rights in the Qualified Industrial Zones (QIZ).

A survey proves that 28 percent of the jobless 180,000 locals are gladly willing to work for JD100-150 per month.

Salem also met with the Garments, Accessories and Textiles Association alongwith Minister of Industry and Trade Sharif Zu'bi and assured that the government would provide complete support to the garment sector and QIZs.

NLC has reported that the immigrant workers had 15-hour shifts and suffered physical abuse at many domestic firms that also practiced illegal confiscation of their passports and other documents.

Although the latest study says that over half of these companies had made reforms, the Government has acknowledged the problem as commonly persistent and is taking major steps.

"Overall, progress continues, but serious cases of human trafficking and wage and hour violations persist in garment factories," the report quoted.

Salem responded by saying "The Government is committed to the garments industry and the QIZ idea."
