Welfare scheme for weavers in Kancheepuram is launched by Department of Handlooms and Textiles for the protection of handloom trade.

According to a senior officer, this scheme is applicable to weavers and also to those engaged in the co-operative sector. Medical insurance is also available for the protection against occupational diseases, which will be arranged with ICICI and Lombard insurance company.

Weavers or their family members up to 80 years of age could become members. For this scheme Central Government will bear Rs800 and Rs200 would be contributed by State Government and Rs15000 as medical reimbursement will be available for family members.

Reimbursment is applicable for dental, eye and ENT treatments in Ayurveda, Unani and Rs 2500 for the child delivery expenses for two childrens.

The State Government would bear Rs330 as annul premium for weavers for whom 50 percent of family income is from handloom and weaving and age barrier for this is between 18 to 59 years.

Claims in case of accidental deaths could be made upto Rs80,000, natural death Rs50,000 and impairment of organs Rs50,000. Children of weavers covered under the scheme would receive Rs300 as educational assistance every quarter of the year.
