The International Labour Organisation in Geneva has asked the Bangladesh Government to amendment several clauses with repect to the EPZ Workers' Associations and Industrial Relations Act without delay so as to ensure meaningful respect for the freedom of association of EPZ workers at the earliest.
Earlier in Junes, the ILO's Committee on Freedom of Association concluded after considering a formal complaint lodged against the government of Bangladesh by the International Textile, Garment and Leather Workers' Federation (ITGLWF) allegeding that like other workers, Export Processing workers should enjoy the trade union rights under the provision of freedom of association Conventions.
ITGLWF General Secretary Neil Kearney cmmenting on the ILO decision said, “This is a critical time for Bangladesh's textile and clothing industry. US and EU safeguards on China have provided a breathing space and has opened opportunities to maintain and develop its industry, but that will require meeting the requirements of retailers for goods made in decent conditions."
“The Bangladesh authorities must urgently tackle these issues in order to stabilise the industry. By improving conditions in the industry, Bangladesh would secure a competitive advantage in a global industry in turmoil,” Kearney rounded off.
