China emerges as net exporter in bilateral textile trade with Vietnam

Although China and Vietnam are mutual competitors in the textile trade in the international market, both nations benefit from the synergies of each other’s strengths. China not only exports all textile products, such as apparel, fabric, and yarn, but also imports these products as per its requirements. However, it is a net exporter in bilateral textile trade between the two countries this year.

According to Fibre2Fashion's market insight tool TexPro, China exported apparel worth $1.043 billion to Vietnam during the first four months of this year. Vietnam was the tenth largest market for Chinese apparel shipments, accounting for 2.20 per cent of the total $43.632 billion in apparel exports. During the same period, China’s imports of apparel were valued at $529.512 million, representing 17.02 per cent of its total apparel imports of $3.112 billion. Vietnam was the second largest apparel supplier to China.

In terms of fabric trade, China’s exports to Vietnam amounted to $3.655 billion in the first four months of 2024, which was 16.98 per cent of the total fabric shipment of $21.529 billion. Vietnam was the largest market for Chinese fabric exports. However, Vietnam was the fifth largest supplier when considering Chinese fabric imports. China's total fabric imports amounted to $841.353 million, with imports from Vietnam totalling $62.873 million, or 7.47 per cent of its total fabric imports.

According to TexPro, Vietnam was the top yarn supplier for Chinese imports. China's yarn imports from Vietnam were recorded at $722.537 million, which was 38.25 per cent of its total yarn imports of $1.888 billion in the first four months of this year. Chinese yarn exports were noted at $4.499 billion during the same period, with shipments to Vietnam amounting to $446.726 million, or 9.93 per cent of the total. Vietnam was the second largest market for China.
