Bangladesh, a prominent garment-exporting country, is heavily dependent on China and India for raw material supplies. China has further strengthened its position, accounting for 78.46 per cent of Bangladesh’s fabric imports in 2024. However, it does not enjoy such a strong position in yarn imports by the partner country. China’s share in yarn imports declined in the last year, making it the second-largest yarn supplier after India.

Bangladesh’s fabric imports totalled $8.859 billion in 2024, of which imports from China were valued at $6.951 billion, representing 78.46 per cent of the total. India, the second-largest supplier, accounted for an 8.47 per cent share. Imports from China rose 23.88 per cent from $5.611 billion in 2023. Bangladesh’s total fabric imports increased by 20.03 per cent from $7.378 billion in 2023, according to Fibre2Fashion's market insight tool TexPro.

Fabric imports had decreased by 19.76 per cent in 2023 compared to 2022, when Bangladesh imported fabric worth $9.195 billion. Imports from China also declined by 17.77 per cent in 2023 from $6.924 billion in 2022. China’s share stood at 74.21 per cent in 2022, rising to 76.05 per cent in 2023 and 78.46 per cent in 2024.

China does not hold a similarly dominant position in Bangladesh’s yarn imports, though it maintains a significant market share. In 2024, Bangladesh imported yarn worth $1,224.864 million from China, accounting for 37.42 per cent of its total yarn imports of $3.264 billion. India was the top supplier, with a market share of 53.66 per cent during the year.

China’s share stood at 40.45 per cent in 2022, rising slightly to 40.52 per cent in 2023 before dipping to 37.42 per cent in 2024. Bangladesh’s total yarn imports increased by 21.51 per cent in 2024 compared to $2.686 billion in 2023. Imports from China rose 12.5 per cent from $1,088.607 million in 2023, as per TexPro.

In 2022, Bangladesh imported yarn worth $3.517 billion, with Chinese shipments accounting for $1,422.731 million. Total yarn imports dropped by 23.48 per cent in 2023 compared to 2022, while imports from China also fell by 23.48 per cent during the same period.
