Textile and apparel exports from China declined 17.7 per cent year-on-year during the first quarter of 2020, according to the provisional trade data released by the country's General Administration of Customs. The decline was due to the Chinese Lunar New Year, which was longer than usual due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the virus outbreak outside China.

During January-March 2020, China's textile and apparel exports stood at $45.263 billion. Category-wise, while textile exports decreased 14.6 per cent to $22.694 billion, apparel exports fell 20.6 per cent to $22.569 billion, the data showed.

In March 2020, textile and garment exports were down 15.1 per cent year-on-year to $15.430 billion. Of these, textile exports fetched $8.922 billion, showing a decrease of 6.3 per cent, while exports of apparel declined 24.8 per cent to $6.508 billion.
