Textile and apparel exports from China increased by 9.2 per cent in January 2019 over the same month of the previous year to $25.062 billion, according to the data from the General Administration of Customs. The increase in both textiles and apparel exports may be due to heightened manufacturing activity ahead of the Chinese New Year this month.

Category-wise, textile exports rose 14.6 per cent year-on-year to $11.412 billion during the month, while apparel exports grew 5.1 per cent to $13.650 billion. Apparel exports were positive for the first time since October 2018.

In 2018, China’s textile and apparel exports increased for the second consecutive year by 3.5 per cent year-on-year to $276.73 billion. Segment-wise, textile exports fetched $119.10 billion, up 8.1 per cent. The amount is the highest ever recorded, surpassing the 2014 record of $112.13 billion. On the other hand, apparel exports showed a slight increase of 0.3 per cent and earned $157.63 billion. Apparel exports were positive for the first time since 2014. (RKS)
