China will file a complaint at the World Trade Organisation (WTO) as a response and take corresponding countermeasures to firmly safeguard its rights and interests, a ministry spokesperson said in a statement.
The US unilateral imposition of extra tariff seriously violates WTO rules, the spokesperson said, noting that this move would not only fail to resolve its own problems but also disrupt normal economic and trade cooperation between the two countries, a state-controlled news agency reported.
China urged the United States to view and address its fentanyl and related issues rationally and objectively, rather than frequently using tariffs to threaten other countries, the statement noted.
The United States should rectify its ‘mistakes’ and work with China to meet each other halfway, the spokesperson noted.
Meanwhile, China's business community deeply regretted and firmly opposed the US decision, a spokesperson for the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT) said.
The decision will disrupt routine economic and trade cooperation and threaten the stability of global industrial and supply chains, a CCPIT spokesperson said, adding that the ‘erroneous’ US actions will not solve the problems inside the United States; instead, those will harm bilateral ties and hit global economic development.
President Donald J Trump recently announced the imposition of additional tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico and China, citing a national emergency under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).
