  • In October 2023, Germany's export industry showed a slight improvement in sentiment, with export expectations rising to -6.9 points from -10.8 points in September.
  • However, this optimism is limited to a few sectors like leather goods manufacturing.
  • Most other industries, particularly machinery manufacturers, anticipate a decline in international business.
Sentiment in the German export industry has brightened a little with export expectations having risen to -6.9 points in October 2023, up from -10.8 points in September. Only a handful of industries currently expect their exports to rise including manufacturers of leather goods.

Most other industries are predicting a drop in international business. Several manufacturers of machinery are concerned about a lack of international orders, the ifo Institute said in a press release.

“However, Germany’s export economy is still being rather cautious looking ahead,” said Klaus Wohlrabe, head of surveys at ifo. “Many companies are experiencing a drop in competitiveness in international markets.”
