Sentiment in Germany’s export sector improved in September, with ifo Export Expectations climbing to 3.5 points from -3 in August. Overall manufacturing confidence held steady at a positive 3.5. By contrast, manufacturers of textiles (-5.1) and machinery and equipment (-6.4) remained weak, while manufacturers of wearing apparel recorded the steepest drop at -37.7.Export business remained difficult for companies in the textile and clothing sectors, ifo Institute said in a press release.

The ifo Institute noted difficulties in textiles, and clothing, with Wohlrabe cautioning that despite the improvement, a sustained export upturn is not yet evident.
“However, a sustained upturn is not yet in sight,” said Klaus Wohlrabe, head of surveys at ifo. “Global trade flows are currently undergoing a reshuffle. The German export industry is still searching for its role in this environment.”
