Germany’s exports to countries outside the European Union (EU) were up by 1.5 per cent in November 2021 on a calendar and seasonally-adjusted basis compared with October. Based on provisional data, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reported that upon calendar and seasonal adjustment, exports to third countries were 14 per cent higher than in February 2020.

The real (price-adjusted) turnover of all wholesale enterprises in Germany was 1.9 per cent higher and the nominal (not price-adjusted) turnover was 11.5 per cent higher in the third quarter of 2021 compared with the same quarter of 2020.

The large difference between the real and nominal increase was particularly due to the substantial increase in wholesale prices in the third quarter of 2021, Destatis said on its website.

This development has been noticeable since the second quarter of 2021. Compared with the fourth quarter of 2019, the quarter before the coronavirus pandemic broke out in Germany, turnover in the third quarter of 2021 was up by 0.7 per cent in real terms and by 8.8 per cent on a nominal basis.

In September 2021, the year-on-year increase in turnover was 1.2 per cent in real terms and 11.6 per cent in nominal terms.
