India's textile & apparel exports drop 1.46% in 2015-16

Exports of textiles and apparel from India dropped 1.46 per cent in 2015-16 compared to the previous fiscal, a government sponsored body has said.

Compared to overall textile and garment exports of $35.969 billion made in April-March 2014-15, India's export earnings in fiscal 2015-16 stood at $35.445 billion, The Cotton Textiles Export Promotion Council (Texprocil) said citing data from Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics (DGCIS), ministry of commerce.

Category-wise, clothing exports grew marginally by 0.97 per cent to $16.997 billion over exports of $16.833 billion in the previous fiscal, the data showed.

Exports of cotton textiles including yarn, fabrics, made-ups, handloom products, etc, fetched $10.114 billion in 2015-16, showing a fall of 6.12 per cent compared to exports of $10.774 billion in the previous year.

Similarly, exports of man-made textiles including yarn, fabrics, made-ups, etc, declined by 12.13 per cent to $4.635 billion from $5.275 billion in April-March 2014-15.

However, exports of jute and jute products, including floor covering, registered a sharp increase of 69.80 per cent during fiscal 2015-16, and increased to $590.03 million from $347.48 million in the previous fiscal.

Carpet exports jumped 7.27 per cent to $1.459 billion, whereas exports of handicrafts, excluding handmade carpet, increased 19.61 per cent to $1.648 billion. (RKS)
