India's textile imports valued at $4.5 bn in Jan-Aug 2023

India imported textile products worth $4.586 billion from around the world during January-August 2023. The import of man-made filaments, strips, and similar man-made textile materials (chapter 54) was valued at $1.191 billion, representing the most dominant product category with a 25.98 per cent share. The inbound shipment of fibre and filament (excluding vegetable textile fibres) accounted for more than half of the total textile imports during this period. 

Imports of man-made staple fibres (chapter 55) amounted to $638.470 million during the period, constituting 13.92 per cent of the total. Cotton imports (chapter 52) were valued at $611.633 million, accounting for 13.34 per cent of the total. Overall, fibre-filament imports comprised 53.24 per cent of the total textile imports, according to Fibre2Fashion’s market insight tool TexPro. 

India imported textile fabrics (chapter 59) worth $530.405 million (11.57 per cent), knitted or crocheted fabrics (chapter 60) worth $474.727 million (10.35 per cent), vegetable textile fibres (chapter 53) worth $368.595 million (8.04 per cent), wadding, felt, nonwovens, and special yarns (chapter 56) worth $277.248 million (6.05 per cent), wool, fine or coarse animal hair (chapter 51) worth $251.694 million (4.79 per cent), silk (chapter 50) worth $142.632 million (3.11 per cent), and other fabrics (chapter 58) worth $131.141 million (2.86 per cent). 

Textile imports in 2022 were recorded at $8.133 billion. Of this, the most dominant category was cotton (chapter 52) imports, which amounted to $1.735 billion (21.34 per cent). Inbound shipments of man-made textile materials (chapter 54) were valued at $1.682 billion (20.69 per cent), man-made staple fibres (chapter 55) at $1.244 billion (15.30 per cent), textile fabrics (chapter 59) at $887.008 million (10.91 per cent), knitted or crocheted fabrics (chapter 60) at $782.238 million (9.62 per cent), vegetable textile fibres (chapter 53) at $506.559 million (6.23 per cent), wadding, felt, nonwovens, and special yarns (chapter 56) at $449.709 million (5.53 per cent), wool, fine or coarse animal hair (chapter 51) at $329.021 million (4.05 per cent), silk (chapter 50) at $273.198 million (3.36 per cent), and other fabrics (chapter 58) at $242.976 million (2.99 per cent), as per TexPro.
