Insights

  • India has seen a significant decline in its fabric exports to Cambodia over the past 4 years, exacerbated by the pandemic.
  • Exports plunged to $6.891 million in Jan-May 2023, down from $20.029 million in 2022.
  • This comes amid a general stagnation in Cambodia's fabric imports.
  • China dominates the Cambodian fabric market with over 83 per cent market share.
India has been unable to recover its foothold in Cambodia's fabric market even after four years of COVID-related disruptions. Cambodia imported fabric worth $6.891 million from India during the first five months of 2023. This is a significant drop compared to $20.029 million in 2022, which was itself 35 per cent lower than the $31.379 million recorded in 2019.

Cambodia’s fabric imports have been stagnant since the COVID outbreak in 2020, when they dropped to $17.381 million. They decreased to $16.216 million in 2021 and increased to $20.029 million in 2022, according to Fibre2Fashion's market insight tool TexPro.

For January to May 2023, Cambodia imported 5.556 million square metres of fabric at an average price of $1.13 per square metre, totalling $6.291 million in value. An additional 4,030 kg of other fabric types was imported at an average price of $148.99 per kg. It should be noted that some varieties of fabric are traded in square metres, while others in kg by weight.

Earlier, the country imported 14.885 million square metres of fabric valued at $18.989 million, with an average price of $1.28 per metre, in 2022. In the same period, 17,984 kg of fabric was imported, valued at $1.040 million, with an average cost of $57.86 per kg. Prior to the pandemic, Cambodia had imported 16.999 million square metres of fabric valued at $24.690 million, with an average price of $1.45 per metre, and 733,145 kg of fabric valued at $6.688 million, at an average of $9.12 per kg, as per TexPro.

It's important to note that China dominates Cambodia's fabric market with more than an 83 per cent market share. India ranks eighth with less than a half per cent share.
