In August 2023, the country also imported textile yarn and fabric worth 96,452 million yen. This marked an 18.5 per cent decline from August 2022 and accounted for 1.1 per cent of Japan's overall imports.
Conversely, Japan's exports in textile yarn and fabric dropped by 3.2 per cent year-on-year, totalling 60,780 million yen. However, exports of textile machinery showed a slight increase, reaching 25,713 million yen, a 1.9 per cent rise from August 2022. These exports contributed 0.3 per cent to Japan's total exports.
For fiscal 2023, running from April to March, Japan's imports of clothing and accessories surged to 3,619,550 million yen (approximately $25.05 billion). This represents a substantial 26.1 per cent growth compared to the previous fiscal. Additionally, imports of textile yarn and fabric reached 1,275,608 million yen, marking a 23.2 per cent increase. During FY23, Japan exported textile yarn and fabric valued at 776,999 million yen, and textile machinery exports were worth 306,781 million yen.
