The country continued to see a rise in clothing imports for the second month in a row. Earlier, it had noted a decline during several previous months and the previous fiscal FY24.
Additionally, Japan saw an 8.8 per cent year-on-year increase in its textile yarn and fabric imports in May 2024, totalling 102,626 million yen and accounting for 1.1 per cent of total imports.
Japan's exports of textile yarn and fabric increased by 11.4 per cent compared to the same period, reaching 67,648 million yen, while exports of textile machinery dropped by 32.8 per cent during the same period, amounting to 21,418 million yen and contributing 0.3 per cent to total exports.
During fiscal 2023-24 (April to March), Japan's imports of clothing and accessories were 3,564,850 million yen (approximately $23.107 billion), marking a drop of 1.7 per cent. Imports of textile yarn and fabric eased by 10.4 per cent to 1,143,805 million yen. During the same fiscal, Japan exported textile yarn and fabric valued at 802,178 million yen, while textile machinery exports amounted to 320,947 million yen.
In fiscal 2022-23, Japan’s imports of clothing and accessories were 3,619,550 million yen (approximately $25.05 billion), and textile yarn and fabric imports were 1,275,608 million yen. During the same fiscal, Japan exported textile yarn and fabric valued at 776,999 million yen, while textile machinery exports amounted to 306,781 million yen.
