Apparel exports from Tunisia to European Union declined in 2005 as China, India and Turkey have captured Tunisia's market share there.

From January to September, Tunisian exports of textiles and apparel to the EU amounted to 2.039 billion euros registering a 5.0 percent fall in comparison to previous year levels.

This decline in export volume caused further drop in Tunisian apparel production.

According to INS Index of Textile and Apparel Output (1990=100), October production reached 202.0, up from 191.2 in September, but still reflected a 7.1 percent decline compared to last year.

Eight of the past ten months witnessed drop in monthly output.

Europe has been a major source of fabric for Tunisia, which has to compete with Chinese and Indian exporters who have significant price advantages in fabric costs.
