Indian export shipments are facing more non-tariff hurdles in the US market as textile exports to the US expand.

Instances of non-tariff hurdles imposed on Indian textile exports emerged in the last few months.

Indian exports are put through strict labeling and marking requirements, security restrictions and document verification at US ports.

Moreover, issues like observance of labour and environmental laws are also raised, said senior Government officials.

Many exporters discussed the restrictive measures of the US with Government.

These issues are being dealt with by Non-Agricultural Market Access (NAMA) negotiations under the WTO with specific references to non-tariff restrictions on import of textiles and apparel in the developed countries, a Textile Ministry official said.

India was likely to be put under restrictive measures following the suppression of Chinese exports, mainly on the request of the US textile industry's demands to prevent imports into the country.

Indian exporters, who have registered a 25 percent average growth in 2005, second only to China, and are already facing `spot audits' from bigger US buyers like Wal-Mart and JC Penney, sources revealed.
