Clothing manufactured in China downpoured markets of the United States last year; however, consumers did not get any benefit in prices since prices decline as per customer expectations.

Industry experts commented measures that curbed the imports also stalled the price declines.

However, data shows import growth by at least 50 percent on an average with several clothing categories surpassing 600-percent mark.

During the first 11 months of 2005, clothing prices in the country fell by 1.2 percent compared to the same period in 2004, said Peter Morici, former Chief Economist, US International Trade Commission.

Textile exports from China to America increased 50 percent in the first 10 months last year compared with the same period, the year before, said the China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Textiles.

Volume of men's and boy's cotton pants imported from China shot past 609 percent mark last year, and volume of women's and girls' cotton pants increased phenomenal 845 percent, said Lloyd Wood, a spokesman for the American Manufacturing Trade Action Coalition, a US workers' advocacy group.
