Sixth round of US-Thai FTA talks inconclusive

Discussions held under the Free Trade Area (FTA), between Thailand and the US, in the sixth round of talks, covered all subject areas but remained inconclusive, said the head of the Thai negotiating team.

Negotiators covered all areas of goods and conditions, including industrial goods, rules of origins, agricultural products, trade compensation measures, textile and garment, sanitary measures and customs formalities, said Thai Chief Negotiator Nitya Pibulsongkram.

The moment agreement becomes effective, tariffs of 8,100 goods, which includes wood and rubber-based products, glassware and ceramics, electronic goods, plastic products, jewelry and food, will be reduced to zero.

Thailand will gradually abolish import tariffs on important goods like milk, onions, meat, corn, tea and coffee.

Export and domestic subsidies should be reduced in order to create conducive conditions for competition has been proposed by Thailand to the US.
