Cotton import volume up year on year

Peru has registered an increase in cotton imports for January to November period this year, compared to the previous year.

Cotton import volume for November 2005 declined.

Peru's exports were negligible during the January to November period.

During November, Peru imported 13,164 bales of cotton, with import from the US amounting to 5739 bales, Brazil 4682 bales and Bolivia 1900 bales.

Cotton imports for January to November 2005 period were 200,362 bales, a rise of 40.4 percent over last year.

The U.S supplied 113,455 bales of upland variety and 36,968 bales of Pima variety of cotton.

It emerged as the largest supplier, with 75 percent of Peru's total cotton imports.

Meanwhile, Peru's cotton yield, area and production figures revealed by United States Department of Agriculture indicates that cotton area in 2004/05 stood at 94,000 hectares that is expected to go up to 100,000 hectares.

Its yield in 2004/05 stood at 690 kilograms per hectare, while in the current year it is expected to reach 697 kilograms per hectares.

Production in 2004/05 stood at 298,000 bales while in 2005/06 it is estimated to reach 320,000 bales.
