TDAP's apathy disturbs Pakistan textile exporters

Textile exporters in Pakistan have expressed concern over the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan’s (TDAP) apathy in implementing the EU notification permitting duty free import of 75 items, mostly textile products.

In a statement to the media, Towel Manufacturers' Association of Pakistan (TMA) Chairman Mehtabuddin Chawla said in spite of the delay in granting the Autonomous Trade Preferences (ATP) by the EU to Pakistan, they are contented by the move. However, TDAP’s apathy in fulfilling the ATP formalities like issuance of Certificate of Origin is troubling the exporters.

TDAP is yet to implement the formalities like issuance of Certificate of Origin, required as per the EU notification, which is causing exporters to suffer huge losses, Mr. Chawla said.

The laxity on the part of TDAP will annihilate the extensive efforts that the Ministry of Commerce, consulates of concerned EU nations and WTO’s Brussels wing had put in to win the EU trade preferences for Pakistani exporters.

Hence, the Ministry of Commerce should interfere in the matter so as to make it possible for the exporters to benefit from the ATP granted by the EU, Mr. Chawla added.
