Textile exports to United States through African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) earned US $1.72 million for Ethiopia, informed Customs Authority of the country.

This value of textile exports to the United States has been increasing since 2000, said Tekle Gebre-hiywot, senior export authority.

He added that entrepreneurs have been successful in increasing the volume of textile exports from Ethiopia, but they have failed to benefit from AGOA as expected.

This failure occurred as there is limited number of entrepreneurs busy in textile sector and they fail to export textile products in sustainable manner; moreover, lack of raw materials and skilled labour have also been attributed to this failure.

Country had shipped 413,330 kg of textile products to the United States in 2005 alone.

Tekle appealed entrepreneurs that they should fetch more foreign currency from the exports by taking advantage of AGOA.
