The EU and the US are among those countries imposing restrictions on the import of textiles and apparels from China during the first six months of 2012.

The emerging economies of Argentina, Brazil, India, Mexico and other countries have also initiated protectionist measures to safeguard their domestic industries by imposing restrictions on imports of textiles and clothing items from China during the first half of the current year.

According to relevant data, there were 14 cases of import restrictions on China’s textiles and garments during January-June 2012, which is about 50 percent more than the number of cases initiated during the corresponding period of 2011.

During the period under review, the EU Rapid Alert System for non-food products issued 122 notifications against the textiles and clothing items imported from China, up 121.82 percent year on year.

Similarly, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission issued 11 notifications on Chinese textiles and garments. In addition, the US also released nearly 20 recall notifications on various textile and apparel products imported from China.

Industry experts expect several standard certification and trade defense measures, including technical trade barriers, to be frequently imposed on Chinese textiles and garments in 2013.

In addition to trade protection measures implemented by several countries, Chinese textile and apparel industry will also be impacted by fluctuations in prices of cotton, crude oil and other raw materials, as well as appreciation of the Renminbi and the continued rise in wages, they add.
