Japanese economic downturn impacts Chinese textile exports

The economic downturn in Japan impacted its textile imports from China last year.

In 2012, Chinese textile and garment exports to Japan totaled US$ 27.23 billion, showing a marginal increase of only 0.5 percent year-on-year, which was lower than the overall growth rate of 2.8 percent year-on-year achieved by Chinese textile and clothing exports during the year.

Chinese exports of textiles to Japan declined by 2.2 percent year-on-year, while garment exports rose by 1.1 percent year-on-year.

In terms of volume, knitted and woven garment exports dipped 5.7 percent year-on-year, but their average export price rose by 7 percent year-on-year.

Experts attribute the decline in Chinese textile and garment exports to weak export market, falling corporate profits and demographic changes, which together restricted the recovery of Japanese economy in 2012.
