Bolivian textiles trade remains negative in Q1'13: IBCE

Bolivian textiles sector has continued to show negative growth in its trade balance during the first quarter of 2013, according to ‘Bolivia: Apparel Textiles Foreign Trade’ report published by the Bolivian Institute of Foreign Trade (IBCE).

During the first quarter of 2013, Bolivia exported textile and apparel items worth US$ 6 million, with maximum exports of US$ 3 million to Venezuela, followed by Chile (US$ 812,000) and Argentina (US$ 682,000).

The major apparel items exported from Bolivia include cotton shirts, T-shirts, lingerie, denimwear and woolens. The Department of La Paz accounted for almost 86 percent of the country’s total textiles exports.

During the same period, the Latin American country imported textiles and clothing worth US$ 10 million, with China topping the list (approx US$ 4 million), followed by Peru (approx US$ 2 million). The Department of Santa Cruz imported about 46 percent of the country’s total textiles import.

Last year, too, Bolivia’s textile and apparel trade balance was in the red as the country imported goods worth US$ 50 million compared to exports of US$ 39 million.
