The exports of textiles and garments from Portugal increased by 10.1 percent year-on-year in April this year to €330.8 million, according to the data released by the Textile and Clothing Association of Portugal (ATP).

However, April 2013’s total textile and apparel exports are still lower than the €342 million exports achieved in April 2011. It is because Portugal’s textile and apparel exports fell over 12 percent year-on-year in April 2012.

In April 2013, exports of knitwear and accessories saw an increase of €41 million or 7.7 percent over the same period last year. Similarly, the exports of readymade textiles, including home textiles, grew by €19 million or 12.3 percent over the corresponding month of last year.

The exports of fabric, however, decreased by €33 million or 11 percent year-on-year in April 2013, according to Deinheiro Vivo report.

Meanwhile, Portugal’s textile and clothing imports grew by 13.2 percent year-on-year to €260.4 million during the month under review.

From January to April, Portugal’s textile and apparel trade showed a surplus of €376 million, an increase of eight percent year-on-year.
