Cotton exports of Spain showed a sharp rise in January 2006 with a record 51,400 480 pound bales export.

Shipments to China were responsible for this surge in growth.

Export to China reached 27,690 bales in January, the balance of the January shipments were to the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, Portugal and Thailand.

Cotton shipments achieved a record 74,087 480 pound bales export during August 2005 through January 2006 period.

China became a major buyer of Spanish cotton first during 2003 to 04 period.

Chinese spinners prefer the high grade SM/GM 1-1/8” Spanish crop.

Spain's cumulative August 2005 through January 1006 cotton exports shipments amounted to 180,489.3 480 pound bales, recording year on year growth of 24.6 percent.

The top export destinations were China, United Kingdom and France.
